Ditch the Mix Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Sorry no photos…yet!  But if you don’t know what tacos look like… well then the recipe probably wouldn’t do much good anyway.  The seasoning looks like a blob of white powder because the cornstarch covers everything.

My aunt requested this because she likes to control the salt content in the taco seasoning and those pre-made mixes do have a lot of salt.   Now you can double, triple, etc. this recipe and just make sure to use 1/4 cup of the mixed seasoning.  It always makes 1/4 cup for me when mixed.

Benefits of homemade taco seasoning:
1.  You can make it fresher and cheaper.  (Depending on your source of spices.  Spice shops and amish stores are MUCH cheaper than Walmart any day at least in my area.)
2.  You can control the heat.
3.  You can control the salt content.

Homemade Taco Seasoning
yield 1lb. of taco meat

1 Tbs. cornstarch
1 Tbs. dry, minced onion (if you don’t cook onion with your meat to begin with)
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. cayenne ** Note** if using store-bought cayenne (like McCormick) this will be medium hot.  Use less if you don’t want the heat.  If you are using fresh cayenne from a spice shop, this measurement makes it hot and I would recommending using 1/8 tsp or less.  Learned that the hard way!

Mix all together and add to 1 lb. of cooked ground beef or turkey.  Turn skillet on low and add 3/4 cup water.  Stir and simmer about 5 minutes until thickened.
